There has been virtually no competition from Apple’s rivals as the company has seen incredible demand for the iPhone 17 lineup. This year, it appears that the Cupertino firm finally introduced significant upgrades to all four models instead of focusing solely on two premium offerings.
One interesting statistic is that over 315 million devices are now more than four years old. If there was an upgrade worth pursuing, the majority of these owners would likely find the iPhone 17 to offer noteworthy features that justify a purchase.
Out of all iPhones currently in use, 21 percent of owners now have a valid reason to upgrade to the iPhone 17. Apple finally paid attention to giving the base model some notable hardware upgrades. The ProMotion display on the iPhone 17 is a significant improvement, along with double the internal memory and its unchanged starting price of $799. This combination makes it an attractive option for customers who don’t want to spend flagship-level funds.
According to a report from AppleInsider, out of the approximately 1.5 billion devices currently in use, around 315 million are more than four years old. With increased device age and Apple’s extra effort with its iPhone 17 launch, there is potential for strong sales momentum.
Previous estimates suggest that Apple will ship 100 million new iPhones this year, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max making up a large portion of those units. Due to these factors, Apple’s fiscal 2026 iPhone shipments are projected to be between 240 million and 250 million, as Webdush Securities predicts that the company’s recovery in China is imminent.
The upcoming holiday season will likely see increased activation numbers for iPhones. Whether Apple can maintain this momentum remains to be seen, but we’ll revisit it before the year ends.
