When Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced that Borderlands 4 would launch for the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, 2025, he initially hinted at a delay. However, he quickly corrected himself and excitedly confirmed the original date.
Unfortunately, this initial announcement was short-lived. This evening, Gearbox officially informed fans via Twitter that the release of Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2 has been delayed. No new release date or window was provided, and the company stated they will update fans once their plans are fully adjusted.
In line with Nintendo’s eShop policy, all digital pre-orders have been canceled. You’ll need to pre-order again when a new date is announced. Pre-ordered digitally? Your order will be automatically canceled on Friday, September 26, 2025. For physical pre-orders, contact the retailer.
In their statement, Gearbox explained: “Greetings, Vault Hunters – We need to share that the release of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 is being delayed. We do not take this decision lightly but are committed to delivering the best possible experience for our fans. The game requires additional development and polish time.”
It’s unfortunate news for Borderlands fans who were looking forward to playing the game on the Switch 2 in just over a week, had it stayed on track with its original release date. However, given the numerous technical issues faced by the game on PC and consoles, this delay is not surprising.
Hopefully, the game will be released before the end of the year, making Pitchford’s July joke still relevant. With all the ongoing fixes for existing versions of the game, it seems unlikely that the Switch 2 version will be pushed back to late 2026.
