Qualcomm has officially unveiled its latest mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This new processor uses third-generation Oryon cores to deliver impressive performance and efficiency improvements over its predecessor.
**3rd-Generation Oryon Cores**
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 features a ‘2 + 6’ CPU cluster with two high-performance cores running at 4.60GHz and six efficient cores operating at 3.62GHz. Qualcomm claims this new SoC can offer 20 percent better performance than the Snapdragon 8 Elite, though it did not specify whether these gains are seen in single-core or multi-core workloads. The company also asserts that it is the fastest mobile CPU available, but verification through benchmarks will be necessary.
The new CPU cluster is said to provide a 35 percent improvement in efficiency and consume 16 percent less power than the Snapdragon 8 Elite. The third-generation Oryon cores support hardware-based AI acceleration, though Qualcomm notes that this feature does not include SME2 support, which is available on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500.
**GPU and Gaming Details**
Paired with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the Adreno 840 GPU. This graphics processor uses a ‘sliced’ architecture similar to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. The Adreno 840 now features 18MB of dedicated cache for developers to utilize, which Qualcomm calls Adreno High Performance Memory and consumes up to 10 percent less power.
Qualcomm has partnered with game developers like Tencent to optimize titles for this platform. The maximum GPU clock speed of the Adreno 840 is 1.20GHz, an increase from the Adreno 830’s 1.10GHz. The graphics processor reportedly delivers a 23 percent performance boost and a 20 percent reduction in power consumption with ‘out-of-the-box’ support for Unreal Engine 5.
**Neural Processing Unit and AI Performance**
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 includes the next-generation Hexagon NPU, which can handle increased AI workloads without an internet connection. According to Qualcomm, this component is 37 percent faster than the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s NPU. The company has also added AI accelerators, resulting in a 16 percent better ‘performance per watt’ for the NPU.
