Brazil’s Supreme Court chose not to detain former President Jair Bolsonaro, despite his violation of court-ordered restrictions. However, the court warned that repeated breaches could result in imprisonment.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the case alleging Bolsonaro’s involvement in coup plotting, upheld the restraining orders. He noted that he can still allow Bolsonaro to give interviews. Last week, Moraes ordered an ankle monitor for Bolsonaro and banned his social media use. This was due to allegations that Bolsonaro had communicated with former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Brazil-related tariffs, which Trump referred to as a response to what he called a “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro.
Following Bolsonaro’s breach of the social media restrictions by speaking to journalists in Brasilia, Moraes threatened to arrest him. However, due to the isolated nature of the infraction, no arrest was carried out. Bolsonaro, who maintains his innocence, criticized the social media ban as “cowardly” and promised to continue engaging with the media.
