WASHINGTON – A recent CBS News/YouGov poll found that 39% of respondents believe President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are primarily responsible for the federal government shutdown. Thirty percent blame Democrats more, while 31% think both parties share equal responsibility.
The poll also revealed that 52% of respondents disapprove of how Trump is handling the shutdown, as well as 52% who disapprove of how congressional Republicans are managing it.
Meanwhile, 49% of respondents disapprove of the way Democrats in Congress are addressing the shutdown.
The CBS News/YouGov poll, conducted between October 1 and 3 among 2,441 adults, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.
The government shutdown, now entering its second week, continues with no funding deal in sight as both parties remain at an impasse. Democrats have focused their demands on healthcare, urging Republicans to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies.
Forty percent of respondents believe congressional Democrats’ position is not worth having a shutdown over, while 28% think it is worthwhile. Similarly, 45% believe congressional Republicans’ position is not worth having a shutdown over, with 23% seeing it as worthwhile.
About 750,000 federal employees could be furloughed under a shutdown, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which would withhold about $400 million in daily compensation. Other essential workers like military members and law enforcement will continue working but won’t receive pay until a deal is reached.
