O’Donnell said, “That was prepared so the whole thing I think was a set up. Our producer is not on-the-fly kind of guy.”
The May 23, 2007 episode featured a political discussion between O’Donnell and Hasselbeck about American troops in Iraq that escalated into an intense personal altercation. They were yelling at each other for around 10 minutes.
O’Donnell accused Hasselbeck of not defending her against claims that she was un-American for opposing military advances, while Hasselbeck said she was giving O’Donnell the opportunity to defend herself.
Once friends, they found themselves calling each other cowardly on-air. Two days later, ABC confirmed that O’Donnell had asked to be released from her contract.
USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for “The View” and Hasselbeck for comment.
