Marine scientists estimate that, on average, every minute the equivalent of a garbage truck full of plastic waste enters the world’s oceans, harming marine wildlife and threatening entire ecosystems. There are also growing human health concerns related to exposure to microplastics and harmful chemical components in some plastics.
Three years ago, world leaders at the United Nations Environment Assembly pledged to address this issue with a historic resolution aimed at forging an international agreement on plastic waste from production through disposal and recycling.
The U.N.’s goal was to finalize a treaty by 2024. However, recent talks ended in deadlock between wealthy nations that produce plastics and developing countries that often bear the brunt of plastic waste. Next month, negotiators will gather in Geneva for another attempt to reach an agreement on a global plastic treaty.
Newsweek invites you to join us for “Turning the Tide on Plastic Waste,” a live expert discussion on the treaty and its potential impact on one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Our panel includes:
– **Steve Alexander**, President and CEO of the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), which represents the plastics recycling industry.
– **Dr. Douglas McCauley**, Professor at UC Santa Barbara and co-director of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science and Environment, whose research focuses on the impacts of plastic waste policies.
– **Erin Simon**, Vice President and Head of Plastic Waste and Business at World Wildlife Fund (WWF), leading efforts to combat plastic pollution.
Moderated by Newsweek’s environment and sustainability editor, Jeff Young, this event will provide timely insights for business and community leaders working to address the plastic waste challenge.
