Katsina, located in northern Nigeria, is plagued by insecurity. MSF stated that budget cuts, particularly from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, have significantly impacted the treatment of malnourished children. On Friday, MSF noted a 208% increase in severe cases of malnutrition this year compared to the same period last year. Consequently, 652 children have died in their facilities since the beginning of 2025.
On Wednesday, the United Nations food agency announced it would suspend food and nutrition aid for 1.3 million people in Nigeria’s insurgency-hit northeast by the end of July due to depleted stocks. The Nigerian government has allocated 200 billion naira ($130 million) this year to offset a funding shortfall from the U.S. to the health sector.
Banditry is rampant in Katsina, displacing many people and forcing them to abandon their farms. Despite efforts by the government and local civilian groups to curb bandit activities, security remains a significant challenge.
