The Election Commission of India faced criticism on Sunday as it defended its process of revising the voters’ list in Bihar. Various political parties complained that the draft list would disenfranchise many eligible voters.
With the first phase of Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) completed, the EC reported receiving over 7.24 crore electors’ forms and noted that 36 lakh individuals were either permanently relocated or not found.
In response to the backlash, the EC emphasized that the draft list was not final and provided a one-month window for corrections. Meanwhile, the Congress party criticized the exercise as a “citizenship test,” while the BJP defended it as necessary for electoral transparency.
