ChatGPT’s Conversations Can Be Accessed Through the Wayback Machine

For those unaware, recent internet discoveries reveal that over 100,000 AI conversations from different users can be easily accessed via a simple Google Search. According to OpenAI, the firm is working to de-index these chats, but many are still accessible through Archive.org’s Wayback Machine. This has raised significant concerns for both those who experienced privacy compromises and OpenAI itself.

When the Wayback Machine inquired about OpenAI’s actions regarding removal requests, Director Mark Graham stated that no one from the AI firm had requested URL exclusions for “chatgpt.com/share” URLs. He noted, “We have not received or honored any (large scale) requests for URL exclusion of ‘chatgpt.com/share’ URLs.” If OpenAI, as the rights holder, had asked to exclude specific URLs, they likely would have done so.

In a unique start to his ruling against President Donald Trump’s administration on September 30, U.S. District Court Judge William Young included a scanned handwritten note sent to his office. The note read: “Trump has pardons and tanks – what do you have?” At the top of Young’s opinion in AAUP v.
