Apple has been lagging behind its peers in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. However, a recent report suggests that the company is planning to upgrade its Apple Intelligence platform with new tools. This development could serve as a turning point for Apple’s AI endeavors. Previously, the company stated it would not develop a chatbot similar to ChatGPT but now appears to be reconsidering due to challenges in the field.
Apple Intelligence has been under development for over a year and has yet to make significant strides in the industry. One of its unique features, which was supposed to be rolled out next year, was delayed until then. Despite CEO Tim Cook’s enthusiasm during earnings calls, public opinion remains skeptical. Personalized Siri would have revolutionized the iPhone experience, but its absence indicates that iOS is showing signs of aging.
Prominent analyst Mark Gurman highlights in his latest “Power On” newsletter that Apple intends to change its approach and embrace new AI services. The company recently formed a new team called “Answers, Knowledge, and Information” (AKI), which has been working on various AI services, including a tool for providing users with a ChatGPT-like search experience.
Despite some philosophical reservations among Apple leaders, the company is clearly moving in this direction. Earlier this year, Apple quietly established the AKI team to explore a variety of in-house AI services aimed at creating a new ChatGPT-like search experience.
Apple has been in talks with several AI startups, including Perplexity, which specializes in AI search engines. This indicates that the company is working on some AI-powered features and services for future iOS platforms. In my view, a dedicated AI-powered chatbot with search would be one of the key missing elements in iOS 18 or the upcoming iOS 26, highlighting Apple’s lag behind competitors in this area.
Gurman also notes that the new team is led by Robby Walker, who previously worked on Siri but was removed from control due to delays. Given that development on these utilities has only just begun, it will take time before a final product is ready for public release. Moreover, Apple’s entry into AI search could spur other companies to develop their own versions of the technology.
