Alec Luhn, an award-winning American journalist who had been missing since embarking on a hiking trip in Norway last Thursday, has been found alive. According to officials, Luhn suffered injuries to his legs and was taken to a hospital by helicopter.
Luhn’s wife, Veronika Silchenko, expressed her relief: “We are very, very happy! Many thanks to everyone in Norway who has helped find him.” She added, “It’s hard to explain how I feel right now.”
Alec Luhn is known for his work as a climate journalist and has reported from high-risk regions including the Arctic, Siberia, and Central Asia over the past decade. His disappearance drew significant attention due to these factors.
Luhn was located north of Nedre Buarbreen within Folgefonna National Park after waving to police, who described him as “awake and adequate.” Patrick Reevell, a close friend, wrote on X: “They have found Alec Luhn alive. He is awake and appears well. He seems in good condition.”
Luhn had set out on a solo hike in the Folgefonna region last Thursday after missing a scheduled meeting at Bergen Airport earlier that week. Search efforts were initiated when he failed to make contact with his family. Reevell noted that Luhn often visits glaciers as he cares deeply about covering climate change, but this trip’s prolonged absence was unusual.
Silchenko managed to log into her husband’s laptop and read his diary entries, including the last note updated at 3:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, which mentioned poor coverage. Before embarking on his hike, Luhn had been on holiday in Norway with his parents.
The full extent of Luhn’s injuries is not yet known, but Silchenko will soon travel to Norway to be reunited with her husband.
In a statement to VG, Øystein Torsnes, the Hardanger Police Chief, said: “He has been found, conscious and flown by helicopter to Haukeland Hospital. We are very happy.”
Jan Ã…ge Stengardsbakken, leader of the Red Cross Corps, added: “It’s not often that we have such actions. It’s a day of joy for both relatives and rescue workers, just smiles and joy.”
