When Borderlands 4 launched two days ago, it immediately set a new franchise record for concurrent players on Steam. This number has since been surpassed as recently as thirteen hours after launch, with SteamDB registering 252K concurrent players. The number is likely to increase further over the next few days due to the game’s popularity during its initial weekend. Despite mixed user reviews on Steam, largely due to performance issues, the game continues to attract new players.

OpenAI aims to make its AI tools more accessible and widely adopted by various institutions, including the U.S. government. To support this goal, the company is teaming up with the General Services Administration (GSA) to provide ChatGPT Enterprise to federal executive agencies for just $1 for the next year. This almost-free access is part of a broader initiative to integrate AI tools into the public sector and reduce barriers to adoption.

For just $1, OpenAI Hands ChatGPT Enterprise to the U.S. Government in a Bold Power Move

On Wednesday, OpenAI announced it would provide its ChatGPT Enterprise products to all federal agencies for one year at no cost, except for a symbolic $1 fee. This initiative was introduced through the company’s blog post, which was first reported by CNBC and Bloomberg. The move brings full access to OpenAI’s enterprise features, including enhanced data security, administrative tools, and unlimited model access for federal workers.

OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap emphasized that this strategic move is aimed at bringing AI tools into the public sector, enhancing daily operations, and improving civil servants’ productivity. He stated:

To help civil servants be more productive, creative, and effective in their day-to-day work.

This initiative is part of OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its relationship with lawmakers and regulators. In June, the company launched an initiative called “OpenAI for Government” tailored to federal needs and was awarded a $200 million contract by the U.S. Department of Defense. These developments indicate that OpenAI is shaping how AI is adopted and governed at the national level.

The government would receive these services on a one-year trial basis, with OpenAI collecting feedback during this period to understand how ChatGPT can assist in government tasks. The company is also in talks with several agencies for both pilot programs and long-term partnerships. While the $1 fee seems generous or an attempt to give back to the government, it reflects a deeper strategy. By offering ChatGPT Enterprise for such a low cost, OpenAI aims to build goodwill with institutions scrutinizing tech giants, especially as generative AI becomes more prevalent.

This is not the first time a tech company has used heavily subsidized products to build trust, gather data, and form long-term relationships with government institutions. While this strategic move may accelerate AI adoption in the public sector, it also raises important questions about dependency and security, given the sensitive nature of government data. Nonetheless, offering such a steep discount could help OpenAI gain a competitive edge and secure early dominance within the public sector.
