Apple has made history by becoming the first company to establish a complete end-to-end silicon chip supply chain entirely within the United States. This achievement is part of Apple’s expanded American Manufacturing Program (AMP), which now carries a $600 billion investment over the next four years, including a fresh $100 billion pledge for U.S.-based chip production and supply chain development. Every stage of the chip creation process—from initial silicon wafers to final packaged components—will take place on American soil.
Apple’s $600 Billion American Manufacturing Program Will See Every Stage of Its Custom Chip Production, From Wafers to Final Components, Take Place Entirely in the United States
Instead of relying on international facilities, Apple will handle every step of chip production locally. The supply chain starts with advanced silicon wafers provided by GlobalWafers America, before moving to TSMC’s facility in Arizona, where Apple would be its first and largest customer. Texas Instruments will expand chip production in Utah and Texas, while Applied Materials in Austin will produce advanced semiconductor equipment. This collaboration ensures that Apple’s custom chips remain within the United States for the first time by any tech company in the region.
The scale of Apple’s new plans is impressive. The company expects to produce over 19 billion chips in 2025 alone. Beyond silicon and chip manufacturing, Corning will produce all iPhone and Apple Watch cover glass from its facility in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. MP Materials will manufacture rare-earth magnets in Texas and California for internal components like Taptic Engines. Coherent will create the laser technology used in Face ID, manufactured in Sherman, Texas. If these plans proceed without hindrances, they will significantly strengthen Apple’s U.S. manufacturing presence beyond just chips.
The expansion of AMP will also create thousands of jobs, with over 450,000 positions expected across all 50 states through the supply chain network and collaborations with different suppliers. Apple plans to hire up to 20,000 new employees, focusing on research and development in fields like AI, software, and engineering. These investments will boost the U.S. economy and help secure a strong footing for Apple in the country, addressing global uncertainties. Additionally, they will reduce dependence on external supply chains and avoid potential trade and tariff complications, aligning with the U.S. government’s goals.
Do you think Apple’s decision to build its entire chip supply chain in the U.S. will push competitors and tech giants to follow suit? Let us know in the comments.
