During Sony’s quarterly financial results for Q1 2025, it was revealed that the PlayStation 5 console has shipped 80.3 million units, marking a milestone of 80 million. This achievement is attributed to 2.5 million units shipped in this quarter, a slight increase from the 2.4 million units shipped in Q1 2024.
The performance of the PlayStation 5 remained strong overall during this quarter, with several indicators showing positive trends. Full game software sales increased significantly, jumping from 53.6 million units last year to 65.9 million units in the current quarter—a 23% increase. First-party game sales also saw growth, rising from 6 million units to 6.9 million (+15%). The ratio of digital versus physical game sales continued to favor digital, reaching a historic 83%, up from 80% in Q1 2024.
Monthly active users (MAUs) on the PlayStation Network also increased, rising from 116 million MAUs in Q1 2024 to 123 million this quarter—a 6% increase. Although Q3 and Q4 2024 registered higher MAUs due to typical seasonal fluctuations, the current quarter still showed growth.
Sales for the Game and Network Services segment increased by 8% year-over-year. While the PlayStation 5 is currently lagging behind its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, in terms of time-aligned sales—having shipped only 2.1 million fewer units as of June 2018—the PS5 faced additional challenges such as COVID-19, a global chip shortage from 2020 to 2023, and increased prices due to the economic environment.
Despite these challenges, Sony appears content with the progress, even if sales are slightly lower than those of the PlayStation 4.
