Samsung is making significant investments to boost its production capabilities. The company is pouring funds into its 8.6-generation OLED production facility to meet Apple’s demands for the MacBook Pro upgrade. This investment will enable Samsung to produce 15,000 units per month of oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) technology panels on glass substrates.

The TFT technology offers power efficiency benefits, particularly at high brightness levels. With current production capabilities, Samsung can manufacture up to 10 million OLED panels annually, though industry estimates suggest that only around 5 million units will be shipped for the new MacBook Pro models. Apple is expected to retain the ProMotion branding, meaning the new hardware will likely feature LTPO panels with a refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz.

Notably, reports indicate that Apple plans to eliminate the notch on its OLED MacBook Pros, opting instead for the Dynamic Island cutout design. While Samsung has become the sole supplier for these displays, LG is reportedly planning to set up its own 8.6-generation OLED production facility, with BOE potentially becoming a third supplier in the future.
