Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has formally nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in ending a conflict between Cambodia and Thailand near their border with Thailand.
The White House and the Thai embassy in Cambodia were contacted by Newsweek for comment.
This nomination highlights Trump’s active involvement in resolving global crises, following similar nominations from Israel and Pakistan.
Hun Manet’s office released a letter nominating Trump to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The letter stated that Trump’s “extraordinary statesmanship, marked by his commitment to resolving conflicts and preventing catastrophic wars through visionary and innovative diplomacy,” was demonstrated by his decisive role in brokering an immediate ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.

Cambodian and Thai forces clashed along their disputed border for five days last month, resulting in over 40 casualties on both sides and forcing more than 300,000 to flee. Trump reportedly called both Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, urging them to end the conflict before resuming trade tariff negotiations.
A ceasefire was agreed on July 28, with a detailed agreement signed shortly thereafter. Despite Thai forces being significantly more powerful than Cambodia’s, the swift resolution prevented further loss of life and restored peace between the two nations.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee receives hundreds of nominations each year for the Peace Prize. Any living individual or active organization can be considered eligible. Nominee names remain confidential for 50 years.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt praised Trump’s efforts to end conflicts involving Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, as well as Egypt and Ethiopia.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated: “This is but one example of President Trump’s exceptional achievements in de-escalating tensions in some of the world’s most volatile regions. His consistent pursuit of peace through diplomacy aligns perfectly with Alfred Nobel’s vision—honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to international fraternity and the advancement of peace.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio added: “President Trump and I expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to fully honor their commitments to end this conflict.”
Despite these accolades, Trump has faced significant criticism. He did not succeed in ending the Russia-Ukraine war as quickly as he had pledged.
The Nobel Prizes are scheduled for announcement in October.
