Federal judges have blocked previous efforts by the administration to punish some of these jurisdictions, including Chicago and Portland, Oregon. Attorney General Pam Bondi argues that sanctuary policies impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk. She stated, “The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country.”
Inclusion on the list, which includes both Democrat-run California and Colorado as well as Republican-led Vermont, comes with explicit threats of lawsuits and federal funding halts. Tom Homan, the border czar, has promised to “flood” those jurisdictions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Several federal judges have blocked the administration’s previous efforts to punish some of these jurisdictions, including Chicago and Portland, Oregon.
In many of the jurisdictions included on the new list, local leaders argue that allowing police to partner with ICE discourages crime victims and witnesses from coming forward regardless of their immigration status. Earlier this year, the White House published a significantly longer list but withdrew it after many communities said they were erroneously included. The current list includes both New York City and the state of New York, as well as Chicago and San Francisco.
The Department of Justice defines sanctuary jurisdictions as those offering “sanctuary” to immigrants who lack legal right to be in the country. According to the DOJ, the following communities are considered “sanctuaries”:
