Dekalb County spokesperson Sloan Turner advised residents and members of the campus community to remain indoors as a precaution while the investigation continued. Initially, an alert from Emory University warned that there was an “active shooter” at the CVS store on campus around 4 p.m., urging people to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Avoid the area.”
Footage shared by FOX 5 Atlanta showed heavy police presence and siren activity. NBC News and WSBTV reported that a law enforcement officer was injured and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, though no immediate response was received from the hospital.
At around 6:30 p.m., officials at Emory University’s Office of Critical Event Preparedness announced that the shelter-in-place order had been lifted. However, they advised people to avoid the area due to ongoing police activity on campus.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Atlanta confirmed its awareness of the incident and was coordinating with local law enforcement agents who were responding to the scene.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed concern about another shooting occurring so soon after a shooting at Fort Stewart that left five U.S. soldiers wounded. He praised first responders for their bravery, emphasizing their importance.
Attorney General Chris Carr also reacted to the reports, stating, “We’re horrified by the news out of Emory University. We stand ready to assist our law enforcement partners with whatever they may need.”
Emory University enrolls over 15,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Located northeast of Midtown Atlanta, it is near the headquarters of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
