An image appeared on Reddit that includes a statement explaining PayPal no longer processes Steam purchases in currencies other than the following six: Euros, Canadian Dollars, British Pound Sterling, Japanese Yen, Australian Dollars, or United States Dollars.
According to an answer from Steam Support, “In early July 2025, PayPal notified Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam. This affects Steam purchases using PayPal in currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD.”
The statement continues: “We hope to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies in the future, but the timeline is uncertain. We are also evaluating adding additional payment methods on Steam for customers affected by this.” The support team suggested users try a different payment method, including adding funds to their Steam wallet.
This is the first official statement from Valve regarding the issue. Players have been complaining about problems on Steam forums since early July 2025, which aligns with Valve’s timeline. One user reported making a purchase through PayPal, not in one of the six currencies listed, three days before July 12, 2025.
The reason behind PayPal’s acquiring banks blocking purchases on Valve’s platform in non-listed currencies is unclear. However, many speculate it relates to ongoing issues around payment processors putting pressure on Valve to remove certain games from its platform.
Despite the timing and speculation, there is no concrete connection between PayPal’s affiliated banks stopping transactions due to campaigns to remove adult and NSFW content from game platforms like Steam and Itch.io.
