Slap NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 Laptop GPU Into a Handheld Form Factor & You Get a Device That Is Years Ahead of Current Options
Compact devices like handhelds have evolved significantly over the past few years, particularly with newer APUs from Intel and AMD. However, a modder has taken things to the next level by creating a handheld device that includes NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 laptop GPU. A Bilibili creator, Qingchen DIY, attached a laptop motherboard to a 12.5-inch screen, incorporating components such as Intel’s Core i9-14900HX and NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 variant. The gaming performance on this handheld is truly exceptional.

The handheld managed to run games like God of War, Horizon Forbidden West, and Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K settings. The demo showed a flawless gaming experience even with high-quality configurations. Most modern-day handhelds struggle to run these titles at 1080p with decent frame rates, but this customized handheld, powered by the RTX 4090 laptop GPU, delivered surprising performance.

The DIY handheld features 64GB DDR5-5600 memory and a 2TB SSD capacity integrated into the laptop’s mainboard. To achieve a portable form factor, it includes standard controls like triggers and joysticks, with design cutouts similar to mainstream handhelds.

The thermals on this device are impressive; the GPU ran at around 72 degrees during gaming. This is remarkable given that it relied on its internal cooling mechanism, different from conventional laptops. While categorizing it as a handheld might be an injustice to portable devices, it’s still an outstanding DIY project.
