Today, Crosswind Crew announced that its debut game, Crosswind, will debut in early 2024 on Steam. The studio revealed a shift from the previous plan of delivering a free-to-play survival MMO to a more traditional premium survival game. Following the recent Alpha test, developers surveyed player feedback and preferences, leading them to this conclusion.
Based on player input, new content, features, and gameplay will be added. This includes a new biome and crew improvements, as shown in the summer teaser below. The transition to a paid experience also opens up new possibilities, such as potential mods and dedicated servers.
Set in an alternative Age of Piracy, Crosswind offers a “build, craft, survive” formula with challenging boss fights, sea battles, and seamless ship-to-land gameplay. Driven by real-world characters and supernatural powers, the story unfolds as an epic fight against an ancient evil.
Players take on the role of a freelance captain betrayed and stranded after a job gone wrong. What begins as a grounded survival and revenge narrative quickly evolves into conflict with empires, pirate clans, and mysterious dark powers looming on the horizon.
Seamlessly continuing their adventure from sea to land, players can bombard coastal forts from afar before engaging in hand-to-hand combat with defenders. A variety of ships are available, ranging from nimble cutters to frigates and massive galleons.
At its core, Crosswind aims to be a refined and comprehensive survival experience. Exploring the game world’s biomes will allow players to gather resources for building and crafting. Initially, they might build a shelter that can eventually turn into a fully operational outpost. Recruiting and expanding the crew will speed up harvesting and production.
In combat, players have access to an arsenal of melee weapons and firearms with movesets including parrying, dodging, and using different strikes to their advantage. Managing food, potions, and oils will provide powerful buffs. Defeating challenging bosses grants access to their treasures, and a co-op feature allows for in-game assistance when needed.
