Micron previously supplied Samsung with 60 percent of the Galaxy S25’s LPDDR5X RAM due to yield and heat management issues with Samsung’s memory technology. However, as Samsung appears to be overcoming these challenges, Micron’s production share has dropped to 40 percent, while Samsung’s share has increased to 60 percent.
At 40 percent, Micron has secured a lucrative position for itself, likely supplying Samsung with a large portion of the Galaxy S26 memory chips. Samsung faced issues with its 10nm fifth-generation (1b) process used for LPDDR5X RAM production, including poor yields and thermals. As a result, Samsung’s Device Solutions division was unable to meet the MX division’s sample bidding deadline.
Samsung might have decided to increase its own supply due to the higher shipment numbers of the Galaxy S25 series compared to the previous Galaxy S24 family. With Micron’s share reduced to 40 percent, 22.2 million Galaxy S25 units will now be equipped with Samsung-made LPDDR5X memory, while 14.8 million will use Micron’s chips. Despite this reduction, Micron remains a reliable supplier for Samsung.
It is likely that Samsung will maintain Micron’s current ratio for the upcoming Galaxy S26 launch early next year. Having a backup supplier ensures that Samsung can continue to operate smoothly if it encounters similar issues in the future. Given Samsung’s history with its semiconductor business, such precautionary measures are prudent.
