Liz Murrill, the Attorney General of Louisiana, has announced the filing of a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation, the owner of the online game platform. In her tweet, Murrill alleged that Roblox lacks essential safety protocols, making it an environment where sex predators can thrive, especially since its primary audience is children.
The lawsuit strongly criticizes Roblox for enabling and facilitating systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children across the United States, including in Louisiana. It claims that through willful disregard and deceptive practices, the company has created a platform where child predators can easily operate, contributing to the widespread victimization of minor children. The lawsuit further states that Roblox’s failure to implement effective safety measures to protect its young users from well-documented threats, along with its ongoing failure to warn parents and children about the dangers posed by its platform, has directly contributed to the sexual exploitation of minors.
While the lawsuit focuses on Louisiana, it highlights a global issue. Since its launch in 2006, Roblox has grown into the leading platform for user-generated content (UGC). By February 2025, the company had registered 85.3 million daily active users. According to Roblox Corporation, half of all American children under 16 play the game at least once a month.
The platform has already been banned in several countries due to concerns about child exploitation, including China, Jordan, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, and Turkey. In response, Roblox introduced new child safety measures: users under 13 now need parental permission to access certain chat features, and those under 9 require consent for experiences labeled “Moderate.”
However, Louisiana’s Attorney General believes these measures are insufficient, as evidenced by the lawsuit. Notably, just a few months after the Turkey ban, Roblox announced that it was removing ‘vigilantes,’ who helped maintain a safe environment in the game. According to the developers, their actions were causing an unsafe atmosphere for users.
This legal action raises concerns about the safety of children using online platforms and highlights ongoing efforts to address these issues.
