The meeting opened with military flyovers, a red-carpet ceremony, and an unusual shared ride in Trump’s armored limousine. However, talks ended without a deal after two-and-a-half hours of closed-door discussions. Inside the summit, the U.S. delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, while Russia was represented by longtime allies like Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, and Kremlin economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
Putin called the meeting “constructive and useful” and expressed a desire for long-term resolution. He emphasized that any progress must not be obstructed by Europe. Trump noted some headway but stressed: “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
During their joint press conference, Putin praised the talks’ tone of mutual respect and thanked Trump for hosting them in Alaska. He also spoke warmly about potential bilateral relations, stating his belief that the heritage would help rebuild mutually beneficial ties.
Trump, standing beside Putin, described their personal rapport as “fantastic” and blamed U.S. investigations into Russian election interference for hindering cooperation during his first term. Putin did not dispute this.
Both leaders expressed a desire to achieve peace and discussed potential follow-up meetings, with Putin inviting Trump to Moscow. Despite the warm tone, no formal agreement or cease-fire emerged from the summit.
