Recent reports indicate that the latest Windows 11 update may be causing solid-state drives (SSDs) to become non-functional after large data writes. This issue seems to have affected several drives, particularly those with Phison controllers.
Microsoft’s OS updates have often introduced new problems for PC gamers in the past. Now, it appears SSDs might not be safe either. An X user @Necoru_cat revealed that after installing the ‘KB5063878’ security update on Windows 11, storage drives reportedly malfunction while large files are being written to them simultaneously. The user first noticed this issue when updating Cyberpunk 2077 with the new security update.
According to @Necoru_cat’s detailed analysis:
– OS fails to recognize the SSD after a long write operation.
– If the PC is restarted, the drive’s partition becomes inaccessible.
– Internal testing suggests that issues are more frequent with SSDs using Phison controllers. However, not all SKUs are affected.
A list compiled by NichePCGamer identifies the following SSD drives as being influenced by this issue:
– Corsair Force MP600
– Phison PS5012-E12 controller-equipped SSD
– KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS G4
– Fikwot FN955
– SanDisk Extreme PRO M.2 NVMe 3D SSD
For now, the issue is not widespread and has not been reported across public forums. However, it seems that the security update might be related to SSDs failing after data writes. The problem likely stems from a storage driver or kernel-level regression in the update, which mishandles long sequential writes, ultimately leading to controller lock-up.
We are collecting more updates on this issue but advise users to avoid long sequential write instances, especially if their drive is on the affected list or has a Phison controller.
