When Apple introduced the M4 and M4 Pro versions of the Mac mini, it brought about a significant design change. The compact computer now features a smaller footprint while housing highly efficient and powerful internal components. It is likely that Apple will retain this exterior when unveiling an updated version configured with either an M5 or M5 Pro chip. According to recent reports, a new variant is currently being tested, which could mean a launch in the near future.

Other than a specifications bump, the M5 or M5 Pro Mac mini will likely not offer anything noteworthy

Insiders familiar with Apple’s plans have informed AppleInsider that development work is being done on an updated version of the Mac mini with a unique identifier J873g. Previously, another machine with the identifier J873s was being tested, suggesting it was a refreshed Mac model. For reference, the M4-powered version has the model number J773g, while the more powerful M4 Pro model uses the identifier J773s.

Based on this information, there is almost a certainty that a new Mac mini with M5 and M5 Pro configurations will be available for purchase. However, apart from a slightly improved chipset, we doubt Apple will introduce anything that sets it apart from the current model. Nevertheless, one of the biggest advantages of owning the Mac mini has always been its exceptional ‘price to performance’ ratio. On Amazon, the base model with 16GB of unified RAM and a 256GB SSD is priced at $499, while doubling the internal storage costs an additional $190 to reach $689.

Regarding the M4 Pro version, it comes with 24GB of unified RAM and a 512GB solid-state drive. This configuration is listed for $1,255.34 on Amazon. These prices are some of the most competitive in the industry, and given that Apple would face criticism for overpricing its hardware a few years ago, it demonstrates how the company’s stance has evolved. Assuming that technology giant maintains this unbeatable value for the M5 and M5 Pro options by setting an affordable price tag on the newer Mac mini, we believe it will become one of the best miniature desktops to buy in 2025, provided Apple officially launches the hardware later this year.
