Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court has requested an urgent hearing at the Supreme Court to contest an in-house inquiry panel’s report that found him guilty of misconduct related to a cash discovery incident. His plea seeks immediate intervention.
In response, Chief Justice B R Gavai, addressing senior advocate Kapil Sibal, highlighted the need to form a proper bench to hear the case. The Chief Justice, along with Justices K Vinod Chandran and Joymalya Bagchi, acknowledged the constitutional concerns raised in Varma’s petition.
The inquiry was led by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. It involved examining 55 witnesses over a 10-day period following a March fire incident at Varma’s residence. The investigation resulted in impeachment recommendations by former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.
