In an interview with Quasarzone, AMD addresses the ongoing AM5 socket burnout cases. These issues are reportedly due to BIOS misconfigurations rather than faulty CPUs.

**AMD Says BIOS Misconfigurations Are Causing AM5 Socket Burnouts and Not Its CPUs; Urges Users to Update to Latest BIOSes for Improved Support and Burnout Mitigation**

The AM5 socket burnout issue, along with the death of many Ryzen 9000 series CPUs, particularly the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, is among the most widespread problems in the hardware industry. While ASRock 800-series motherboards and Ryzen 9800X3D are often cited as a deadly combination, CPU damage occurs on boards from other manufacturers as well, but it’s more common with ASRock models.

Despite numerous BIOS updates, the burnout issue has persisted to some extent, though not entirely. Most reports indicate faulty BIOS versions, while some point to faulty CPUs. ASRock itself conducted in-house testing and found no problems with its motherboards. In another instance, ASRock blamed it on PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) settings.

According to AMD, the issue stems from improper BIOS configurations, which often result from ODM BIOSes. AMD says that following its official guidelines can mitigate these issues.

In a Q&A with Quasarzone, AMD clarified that AM5 socket burnouts are due to not adhering to AMD’s official guidelines and values. Some ODM BIOSes contribute to these incidents. With an expanding product lineup, the issue has become more complex and widespread as AMD offers numerous CPU-motherboard combinations compared to Intel.

To address this, AMD recommends always updating to the latest BIOS versions. This enhances CPU-motherboard compatibility, provides additional solutions, and improves performance. At the same time, AMD is working closely with its board partners to resolve the problem.

This isn’t the first time AMD has urged users to update to the latest BIOSes. In a similar situation several months ago, when many burnt CPU reports emerged on ASRock motherboards, AMD issued the same recommendation.
