Despite strong marketing, the current AirPods Max do not offer sufficient improvements over previous models to justify their premium price. They lack the latest H2 chip and come with a USB-C port instead of the Lightning connector that many users prefer. As a result, they are less appealing than the AirPod Pro 2, which is more affordable and comes with advanced features.
While Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman does not provide specific sales figures for the AirPods Max, he notes in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter that these headphones remain popular among those seeking premium audio quality. However, Apple has not sold enough units to warrant developing a new model. The company is unlikely to waste resources on a product with poor market performance.
The AirPod Pro 2 offers better value for money at $169 on Amazon, thanks to the inclusion of the H2 chip, which enhances Active Noise Cancellation and connectivity. This affordability explains why Apple is expected to release the AirPods Pro 3 later this year, possibly with additional health-focused features and a new in-house chipset.
In contrast, the cheapest AirPods Max can be found for $479.99 on Amazon, but not everyone can afford such an investment. Gurman’s newsletter did not specify when the next AirPods Max will launch, but it is likely to be several years before we see a new iteration of this product line. For now, consumers should expect the release of the AirPod Pro 3 with improved features.
