### NVIDIA to Collaborate with Fujitsu to Develop a Supercomputer in Japan

When it comes to nations investing in AI, Japan has been at the forefront. Now, according to a new report, RIKEN will team up with NVIDIA and Fujitsu to develop Japan’s most advanced computing machine. This supercomputer is expected to be a successor to the ‘Fugaku’ and will be the first in the nation to adopt NVIDIA’s AI accelerators and Fujitsu’s MONAKA-X server CPUs.

The Fugaku NEXT aims to become one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, originally targeting up to 600 exaFLOPS in FP8 sparsity. Plans are in place to scale this figure to a zetta-scale benchmark—becoming the first supercomputer to achieve this feat.

The Fugaku NEXT is a hardware joint venture between NVIDIA and Fujitsu, with both firms collaborating on CPU+GPU solutions optimized for performance. The supercomputer will utilize NVLink Fusion for interconnecting onboard components and NVIDIA CUDA-X libraries to leverage application-specific workloads like quantum computing and large language model (LLM) deployment.

### Performance Expectations

NVIDIA’s Vice President of HPC, Ian Buck, revealed at the event that the Fugaku NEXT won’t be limited to Blackwell or Rubin generations. Instead, by collaborating with Fujitsu, they can expect ‘newer inventions,’ potentially including an exclusive architecture on the machine. The partners anticipate a 100-fold increase in performance over the previous-generation Fugaku, driven by architectural advancements and new simulation technologies.

### Future Implications

This supercomputer is expected to be a one-of-a-kind AI powerhouse, setting a new standard for HPC capabilities in Japan and globally. As RIKEN, NVIDIA, and Fujitsu continue their collaboration, they aim to push the boundaries of scientific research and computational power, potentially reshaping various fields from medicine to climate science.
