South Korean manufacturer FADU recently unveiled its next-gen PCIe Gen6 SSD controller at FMS 2025, boasting up to 28.5 GB/s speeds.
#### Key Features of the Sierra FC6161
– **Read and Write Speeds:** Up to 28.5 GB/s (500 MB/s faster than Silicon Motion’s SM8466)
– **Capacity:** Up to 512 TB per storage solution
– **Random Read & Write IOPS:** 6.9 million IOPS and 1 million IOPS, respectively (7% OP based)
– **Power Consumption:** Less than 9W, offering high performance with low energy use
FADU partnered with Meta to leverage this next-gen AI SSD technology for its datacenter and enterprise solutions.
#### Comparison with Other Gen6 Controllers
– **Silicon Motion SM8466:** Up to 28 GB/s speeds and 512 TB capacity.
– **Power Consumption:** FADU’s controller operates at sub-9W TDP, which is lower than the peak load of consumer Gen5 SSDs (7-7.5W) or enterprise-grade SSDs (over 20W).
#### Future Outlook
Despite claims of improved power efficiency, initial reports suggest that while performance will increase with PCIe Gen6 controllers, so might their power draw and heat output. Many companies have already resorted to active air/liquid cooling solutions for consumer SSDs.
It’s unlikely we’ll see any PCIe Gen6 SSDs in the consumer market until at least 2030, as Gen5 SSDs are still not fully mainstream.
