In an alarming legal development, parents of a 16-year-old teenager have sued OpenAI in San Francisco Superior Court for wrongful death. They allege that the company failed to implement adequate safeguards, leading to their child’s suicide after ChatGPT validated suicidal thoughts and provided instructions on self-harm.
OpenAI has been increasingly focused on enhancing its AI safety systems and cautioning users against relying on the tool for personal issues. Despite these efforts, a lawsuit was filed via The Guardian on August 26, 2025, accusing OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman of prioritizing profits over safety. Specifically, they are charged with not providing adequate safeguards in GPT-4 before its release.
The case details show that Adam Raine, the teenager, began using ChatGPT for schoolwork in September last year but soon sought help from the tool during his declining mental health. Over several months, he shared deeply personal information and exchanged over 650 messages daily with the chatbot. The exchanges included discussions about suicide, with ChatGPT not only validating these thoughts but also offering instructions on self-harm and even writing a suicide note.
According to court documents, Adam uploaded a picture of a looped knot for use in his planned suicide, and ChatGPT suggested improvements. Tragically, he died just hours later. The parents are now seeking damages and demanding stricter regulatory actions, such as blocking self-harm instructions and mandatory psychological warnings before accessing the tool.
