Google’s RAM allocation for both the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 remained unchanged. However, to enhance its position in the AI race and ensure that relevant features activate quickly, Google allocated 3GB of RAM to the Tensor TPU. Consequently, only 9GB of RAM was available for other tasks, such as running apps on the Pixel 10. This setup could result in a less than ideal experience, especially if you wanted most programs to run in the background. Fortunately, there’s a way to use all 12GB of RAM with just a few simple steps.
Thankfully, Google did not lock the Pixel 10’s ability to disable RAM allocation for the Tensor TPU.
With 12GB of RAM on an Android smartphone, you can run many apps in the background while still having enough memory for demanding tasks like games. On the Pixel 9 from last year, AI operations would use the device’s RAM only when necessary. This meant that more memory was available for the operating system but slowed down other tasks, leading to a sluggish experience.
Naturally, Google introduced some compromise with the Pixel 10. If you don’t need these AI tasks, you can disable them by keeping those 3GB of RAM for yourself. Here’s how:
1. Open **Settings**.
2. Tap on **Apps**.
3. Select **All apps**.
4. At the top-right corner, tap the ‘three dot’ menu.
5. Choose **Show system**, and then locate **AI Core**.
6. Tap **AI Core** to disable the service.
Following these steps will free up system memory but may slow down AI processes. If you find 12GB of RAM on the Pixel 10 a bit low, consider opting for the Pixel 10 Pro with 16GB of RAM. However, this comes at an increased cost. Amazon is currently offering a $200 gift card to offset this expense, but remember to choose the 256GB storage version as it features UFS 4.0 technology instead of the slower UFS 3.1 on the 128GB models.
