A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday, August 31, causing significant loss of life and injuries. The temblor hit Kunar province, 16 miles east of Jalabad, at a depth of five miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which has recorded at least five aftershocks.

– Interior ministry reports at least 622 dead and 1,500 injured.
– Whole villages have been destroyed.
