AMD RDNA 3 GPUs are reportedly effective when handling FSR 4, delivering slightly lower frame rates compared to other older upscaling technologies.
**User Tests AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT with FSR 4:**
Despite the official restriction that FSR 4 works only on RDNA 4 GPUs (Radeon RX 9000 series), some workarounds have shown that RDNA 3 GPUs can also support it. The RDNA lacks FP8 AI hardware, used in FSR 4, so only RDNA 4 GPUs currently enable FSR 4. On Linux, enabling FSR 4 on RDNA 3 GPUs is possible through Mesa, which can emulate FP8 using FP16.
**Testing Results:**
The user tested Clair Obscur at 1440p with various upscaling technologies—FSR 3, FSR 4, and XeSS—to compare their performance. Using Optiscaler (a popular upscaler tool), the RX 7800 XT delivered about 95 FPS without any upscalers. With FSR 4, the FPS increased to over 100. In contrast, FSR 3.1 and XeSS offered nearly 120-130 FPS due to RDNA 3’s FP8 emulation cost.
**Visual Quality:**
FSR 4 offers better visual quality and stability than FSR 3.1’s Ultra Quality preset even in the lower settings (Quality and Balanced). However, further investigation is needed across multiple games to confirm its benefits for RDNA 3 GPUs.
**Conclusion:**
While FSR 4 on RDNA 3 has some caveats, it can still provide noticeable improvements in games. This was demonstrated by @uzzi38 and XDA developers.
