Why not upgrade from a small gaming handheld to something more immersive with an ultra-wide screen? Bilibili’s PURE DIY channel recently created an incredibly unique and ultra-wide handheld gaming console. With its 32:9 aspect ratio display, it’s longer than most car rearview mirrors.
Powered by the Ryzen Z2 Extreme CPU, which is part of the Zen 5 series, this handheld offers one of the fastest configurations available. The creators sourced an ultra-wide 32:9 display from portable monitor manufacturers and custom-chased a chassis to fit all components, including necessary I/O ports. While the sides have vents for cooling, the back lacks adequate ventilation, which could lead to overheating.
The device includes detachable controllers and even has a kickstand for versatile use. PURE DIY demonstrated its capabilities with racing games but noted that its length might make it suitable for tasks like video and audio editing. The touchscreen display facilitates such tasks seamlessly.
Although responsive and practical for gaming and content creation, portability remains an issue. This DIY project is not meant for mass production, so traditional handheld manufacturers are unlikely to adopt this approach. Future ultra-wide handhelds may appear, but the 32:9 aspect ratio seems too extreme.
