Current-generation Apple Watch models use only 4G modems, which limits their functionality compared to the company’s other devices that feature 5G baseband chips. However, this could change with the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3, potentially featuring a 5G-ready status and satellite communication capabilities similar to some iPhones.
MediaTek, previously rumored to enter Apple’s supply chain for modems, might supply parts for the Apple Watch Ultra 3, indicating that the company plans to introduce in-house 5G modems for smartwatches is still years away. MediaTek’s recent business transformation, including its flagship smartphone chipset releases and the imminent arrival of the Dimensity 9500, has proven it can compete with Qualcomm in premium SoCs and connectivity solutions.
MediaTek’s entry into Apple Watch Ultra 3’s supply chain helps limit Apple’s reliance on Qualcomm and Intel. Given MediaTek’s focus on increasing volume rather than charging higher prices for its smartphone chipsets, Apple might have formed a partnership based solely on this business model. Bringing 5G connectivity and satellite communication to the Apple Watch Ultra 3 could be exclusive to this model, while other models remain limited to 4G modems.
According to industry sources, MediaTek has secured a 5G modem supply for Apple’s Watches, potentially increasing the share of in-house modem chips and reducing reliance on Qualcomm and Intel. The Apple Watch Ultra will feature 5G for the first time, as mentioned by Ray Wang (@rwang07) on Twitter.
An individual with the handle @chyang888 suggests that MediaTek demonstrated a mobile device capable of satellite communication a few years ago, indicating potential collaboration between MediaTek and Apple. With tomorrow’s ‘Awe Inspiring’ iPhone 17 event, we will soon know if the flagship smartwatch ships with a 5G modem.
