GoFundMe has removed a donation page for Decarlos Brown Jr., who is suspected of murdering Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a train in North Carolina.
Brown Jr., 35, was charged with the murder of Zarutska, who was stabbed in Charlotte on August 22. Social media posts over the weekend revealed several fundraisers were launched for him. One comment suggested that “the judicial system and mental health services” were to blame, though this was unverified by Newsweek.
GoFundMe told The Washington Examiner on Sunday that one page had been taken down due to violating their terms of service. The statement read: “GoFundMe’s Terms of Service explicitly prohibit fundraisers that raise money for the legal defense of anyone formally charged with an alleged violent crime. Consistent with this long-standing policy, this fundraiser has been removed from the platform and the donors who contributed have been fully refunded.”
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) released surveillance footage on Friday showing moments before the killing on the South End light rail.
