Apple’s upcoming AirPods Pro 3 could come in two versions: a standard model in 2025 and a premium version in 2026. There has been significant buzz around these updates, especially since the Pro lineup was due for an upgrade. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple would unveil its next-generation AirPods Pro in the second half of 2025. A recent leak by Instant Digital on Weibo added more clarity to this claim.
The 2025 model is said to offer improvements in audio performance and health monitoring sensors capable of tracking both body temperature and heart rate. It will include a new H3 chip with a redesigned charging case and capacitive touch controls, similar to those seen with the iPhone 17.
In contrast, the 2026 version is expected to take a significant leap forward by incorporating a tiny infrared (IR) camera sensor into the earbuds. This addition would allow for air gesture control, reducing the need to physically touch the earbuds and providing substantial convenience for users. This feature also aligns with Apple’s goal of integrating the earbuds more seamlessly with its visionOS ecosystem.
Apple’s strategy of launching two different versions of AirPods Pro reflects its evolving approach to wearables. One version focuses on noticeable upgrades, while the other aims to support long-term visions of AirPods as a central hub for context-aware and gesture-based computing. The market response remains to be seen, but it is refreshing to see Apple experimenting with these new features for future use.
