Any MacBook with an M-series chipset offers a combination of specifications and features that appeal to many customers looking for a reliable, portable machine. These models have a robust build that lasts years, bright displays, and long battery life—making the power adapter almost unnecessary. However, Apple has yet to offer a price point that appeals to a wider audience.
DigiTimes reports that an affordable MacBook with a 12.9-inch screen could be on the horizon by Q3 2025. But given DigiTimes’ inconsistent track record for Apple products, we might consider other sources of information. Given current supply chain dynamics and the need to leverage existing production lines, it’s more likely that the new affordable MacBook will use a 13.6-inch screen, similar to the MacBook Air. The new model may also share the same chassis as the MacBook Air but with different internal components.
For processing power, an A18 Pro chip is expected to replace M-series chips in this lower-cost model. This SoC supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing and can run AAA games at decent framerates, indicating its capability for handling intensive tasks. However, it lacks Thunderbolt controllers, which could reduce the speed of external storage devices and limit the number of connected monitors.
Regarding specifications, we expect 8GB RAM as the base configuration, with a starting storage option of 256GB. Future upgrades to 512GB or higher would depend on your budget.
Apple may price this new MacBook at $599 or $699 to maintain its value proposition. If so, it could attract college students and other cost-sensitive buyers who currently use older Windows machines. With Apple’s promise of robust after-sales support and timely software updates, customers might see transitioning from macOS as a more secure option compared to staying with outdated Windows systems.
DigiTimes suggests that mass production would begin in Q3 2025, with full-scale manufacturing starting in Q4 2025, leading to an expected launch in Q1 2026. However, we believe Apple might release the product earlier, possibly in October 2025.
