Next week, we can expect to see the release of Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. For a long time, it was assumed that this chip would be named either Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 or Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. However, if you were waiting for an explanation from Qualcomm regarding the jump from Snapdragon 8 Elite to Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the company has now provided its reasoning behind the new naming scheme.
According to Qualcomm, switching to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 name clarifies that this chip represents the fifth generation of its top-end 8-series chipset family. The company explains on its OnQblog why it made this change:
“Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marks the fifth generation of our premium 8-series platforms since we introduced our new single-digit naming and visual identity. By aligning with Gen 5, we’re reinforcing its leadership position and simplifying how consumers understand our product roadmap.”
Qualcomm also addresses some common questions that might arise from this change:
1. Is this just a name change?
– No, it’s an unprecedented moment in our roadmap. The Snapdragon 8 Elite was introduced last year as a new tier within our premium lineup, marking significant performance gains.
2. What factors influence the naming scheme?
– Our naming reflects a combination of factors: performance capabilities, launch timing, and how each platform fits within our broader portfolio. So, while the name might seem new, it’s actually a continuation of our established framework — one that evolves with the technology it represents.
The ‘Elite’ designation will continue to be reserved for Qualcomm’s most premium offering for the year. Other products in the Gen 5 series are also expected to share similar specifications. For example, there is speculation that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 might use the same 3nm ‘N3P’ lithography and custom cores as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
