According to Technical Director Christian Buhl, speaking with Kotaku, the main challenge was dealing with the Xbox Series S’s limited memory, which was less than that of the studio’s mid-spec PCs. This resulted in crashing issues across many levels. To address these problems, the team focused on optimizing memory usage. These improvements were applied to all versions of the game, leading to a better and more stable product. Buhl mentioned that the specific optimizations for the Xbox Series S version took only one to two months to complete.
While some developers found opportunities in the technical limitations of the Xbox Series S compared to other systems like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, many others faced serious issues that were difficult to solve. For example, Saber Interactive struggled to get Turok: Origins running at 60 FPS on the system due to memory limitations. Similarly, Black Myth: Wukong and Baldur’s Gate 3 also took a long time to release on Xbox systems because of these challenges.
In particular, for Baldur’s Gate 3 to launch on Xbox systems, Microsoft had to revise its parity clause and allow Larian Studios to release the game without split-screen co-op on Xbox Series S. This feature was later added via an update patch.
