When Borderlands 4 launched two days ago, it immediately set a new franchise record for concurrent players on Steam. This number has since been surpassed as recently as thirteen hours after launch, with SteamDB registering 252K concurrent players. The number is likely to increase further over the next few days due to the game’s popularity during its initial weekend. Despite mixed user reviews on Steam, largely due to performance issues, the game continues to attract new players.

In a surprise announcement, MediaTek revealed that it had taped out its next-gen SoC using TSMC’s 2nm process. This chip will enter mass production at the end of 2025 and should be available around the same time (end of 2026).

MediaTek General Manager Guanzhou Chen stated, “Using TSMC’s 2nm process technology to develop this chip again demonstrates our industry-leading capability in applying advanced semiconductor technologies. Our long-standing collaboration with TSMC ensures that MediaTek’s flagship products achieve high performance and the best energy efficiency, delivering exceptional solutions from edge to cloud.”

TSMC’s 2nm process utilizes a nanosheet transistor structure for the first time. This innovation results in improved performance, power efficiency, and yield. Compared to TSMC’s existing N3E process, the new 2nm technology increases logic density by 1.2 times, improves performance by up to 18% at the same power consumption, and reduces power consumption by approximately 36% at the same speed.

It remains unclear which market segment this SoC will target. However, given that MediaTek uses “flagship” in its description, it might be related to NVIDIA, as both companies have previously collaborated on projects such as the GB10 “Grace Blackwell” Superchip and the N1X and N1 SoCs.

The collaboration between MediaTek and NVIDIA suggests they may be waiting for optimal optimizations before launching a proper AI PC SoC solution. With TSMC’s 2nm technology offering significant improvements, it might be wise to wait until later next year for a big launch.

AMD is also using TSMC’s 2nm process for its upcoming Zen 6 CPUs, indicating that this technology will play a crucial role in the industry.

More details about this new SoC may come from MediaTek around Computex 2026 or from NVIDIA by GTC 2026.
