NVIDIA’s RTX 6000D workstation GPU, introduced specifically for the Chinese market, has not improved its position in China. According to a Reuters report, major Chinese firms are avoiding this GPU due to concerns about performance. The RTX 6000D is NVIDIA’s first Blackwell-based solution for China, featuring GDDR7 memory and TSMC’s 4nm process with a bandwidth of approximately 1,100GB/s. Despite projections that NVIDIA would sell two million units of the RTX 6000D to mitigate losses from the H20 AI chip, the situation remains unfavorable. Chinese tech giants are awaiting regulatory approval for their orders of the H20 AI chips, indicating that the RTX 6000D has not met its objectives.
What’s Next for NVIDIA in China?
Reports suggest that NVIDIA is now pushing to sell their B30A AI chips to Chinese customers. The B30A is a Blackwell GPU using TSMC’s 4nm node, featuring 8-Hi HBM3E and a dual-chiplet configuration, which could offer significant performance improvements over the H20. However, approval for this competitive solution depends on how well NVIDIA can convince regulators, particularly the Trump administration. This task appears to be challenging.
NVIDIA’s Struggles in China
For several quarters, NVIDIA has faced geopolitical uncertainties and had to reduce its AI solutions to comply with US regulations, impacting its business in China. Securing approval from Beijing is crucial for future success. The situation remains uncertain but will be interesting to observe as Team Green seeks to improve its position.
