While the company is renowned for its groundbreaking AI models, it now aims to venture into the hardware space. OpenAI and Jony Ive Poach Apple Talent to Accelerate Its Ambitious AI Hardware Push
OpenAI is not afraid to experiment and pivot in different directions. The company has enlisted Jony Ive to lead its next-generation AI device initiative. But this partnership alone is not enough; OpenAI is actively recruiting other top talent from Apple and seeking support from its key suppliers. According to The Information, ChatGPT’s parent company has hired around two dozen Apple employees, including designers, hardware engineers, and user interface specialists.
This marks a significant step for OpenAI. The company is determined to excel not just in AI but also in consumer-facing hardware. Some prominent hires include Matt Theobald, an expert in manufacturing design, and Cyrus Daniel Irani, lead of human interface design. These new hires bring substantial experience from Apple, where they worked on innovative projects. They will help OpenAI achieve its ambitious goals by integrating meaningful AI with aesthetics.
In addition to employees, OpenAI is also working with Apple’s key suppliers like Luxshare and Goertek for assembly and components. The company aims to develop a range of devices such as digital voice recorders and wearable pins, with a projected launch in late 2026 or early 2027.
OpenAI offers higher compensation and motivation to recruit Apple employees who are eager to work on fresh and innovative products with substantial growth potential. This move could reshape the AI hardware landscape. While developing hardware presents its own challenges, OpenAI’s smart strategy of seeking top talent from Apple will enable it to advance its initiative more efficiently.
