Meta is pushing the boundaries of everyday technology by developing smart glasses. Despite the company’s focus on its AR project, which won’t launch until 2027, it has already taken several steps to make glasses a more familiar accessory. First, Meta released Ray-Ban smart glasses, then added a tiny screen for notifications. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is now working on a dual-display version.
Unlike what many expected, Meta isn’t waiting for its AR glasses and is moving forward with this initiative more aggressively. The new smart glasses will feature two displays—one on each side—and are not strictly classified as AR devices but represent an important step in that direction. They aim to show notifications and quick updates, changing how people view and use glasses.
Meta’s first generation of smart glasses, released in 2021 in partnership with Ray-Ban, was more focused on a hands-free photo, video, and call experience. In 2023, the company introduced a second-generation model with improved cameras, audio, and voice assistant features. Then, in 2025, the Ray-Ban Display glasses added a built-in screen for notifications, aiming to change perceptions of how glasses are used.
Meta’s new dual-display smart glasses will display information on both sides, making it easier to access messages, navigation directions, or even the calendar. While not quite an AR experience, these glasses bring us closer to that future and could become a practical daily tool. Since bringing AR glasses to market is complex, Meta is introducing other initiatives to help users gradually get used to the idea of using glasses as screens.
Meta isn’t alone in this endeavor; Apple has already launched its Vision Pro, and Samsung is developing its own version. However, Apple’s slow approach could give Meta an advantage. Dual-display smart glasses are not the AR sci-fi dream, but they will help people become more accustomed to using glasses as screens.
