The PCI-SIG has released a specification draft for the upcoming PCIe 8.0, which is set to offer eight times the bandwidth of PCIe 5.0.
#### Key Features of PCIe 8.0:
– **Bandwidth:** The new standard will provide up to 1.0 TB/s bidirectionally with a raw bit rate of 256 GT/s.
– **Target Users:** Designed for advanced computing tasks such as AI, quantum computing, and high-speed networking rather than mainstream consumer use.
– **Signal Technology:** Continues to utilize Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-level (PAM4) signaling, similar to PCIe 6.0 and 7.0.
#### Timeline:
– Version 0.3 of the PCIe 8.0 specification has been completed and is available to member companies.
– The PCIe 7.0 was announced earlier this year, with the release of PCIe 8.0 planned for 2028.
#### Objectives of the PCIe 8.0 Specification:
1. Deliver 256.0 GT/s raw bit rate and up to 1.0 TB/s bi-directionally via x16 configuration.
2. Review new connector technology.
3. Confirm latency and Forward Error Correction (FEC) targets will be achieved.
4. Ensure reliability targets are met.
5. Maintain backward compatibility with previous generations of PCIe technology.
6. Develop protocol enhancements to improve bandwidth.
7. Continue to emphasize techniques for reducing power.
#### For Mainstream Usage:
– PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 are currently sufficient, even the fastest graphics cards cannot fully utilize PCIe 5.0.
– PCIe 6.0 is not expected to be a standard for mainstream hardware until after 2030 due to lack of interest from hardware manufacturers.
