According to authorities, a person was shot by police when they arrived on the scene. The suspect is believed to be deceased, though his condition could not be confirmed due to safety concerns and suspicious items found with him. A bomb disposal unit has since been deployed to the site.
At least two individuals were killed, and three others sustained serious injuries. Paramedics treated people for wounds from both a vehicle collision and a stabbing. The attack took place as a large number of worshippers were at the synagogue; they have now been evacuated.
The United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his shock, stating, “I am appalled by the attack at a synagogue in Crumpsall. This has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, making it all the more horrific.” He extended his thoughts to those affected and praised emergency services for their response.
In response to this incident, additional police will be assigned to synagogues across the country. The mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, noted that the immediate danger had passed and that the Greater Manchester Police handled the situation efficiently.
