The incident occurred around 00:25 local time near the Goldener Reiter stop on tram line 7, as reported by the German daily Bild. Police apprehended a 21-year-old Syrian man less than half a mile away from the scene and were searching for a second suspect and the missing weapon.
Photos inside the tram show bloodstains on the floor and passengers trying to stem bleeding with tissues. The wounded American was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
Newsweek has reached out to both the Dresden Police Department and the U.S. State Department for comment.
